Batu Pahat is located at southwest of Kluang, southeast of Muar, south of Segamat and the new Ledang district. It is a district of the state of Johor, Malaysia. The capital of Batu Pahat is Bandar Penggaram. Batu Pahat got its name from Malay language (Bahasa Malaysia) which means "chiselled stone" as there are some quarries near the estuary around that area.

The Batu Pahat Express Bus Station is situated at the old section of the town at Jalan Abu Bakar. Travellers may travel through express buses from numerous towns in Johor and other states. There are direct bus services available for traveller who want to travel to nearby towns within Johor state including Muar, Air Hitam, Melaka, Segamat,  Pontian,Yong Peng and Larkin in Johor Baru.

Popular shopping malls in Batu Pahat are: Pacific Hypermarket,Parkson,The Summit, Square One Shopping Mall, The Store Supermarket, Pasaraya Nirwana Maju, Carrefour and One Stop, catering to the shopping needs of the township of about 500,000 residents. This is commercialisation at its best, and it is seen in every town. However, Batu Pahat still holds its old attraction, possibly due to the fact that the town is not located close to the North-South Highway. From the highway, one has to exit at Ayer Hitam and then drive west for about 40 kilometres before reaching Batu Pahat.

There isn't really much tourist attractions in Batu Pahat. The town, nevertheless, is scattered with many "historical" buildings if you were to walk the streets. Batu Pahat Well in Kampung Minyak Beku is one of the heritage which guests used to visit. Batu Pahat is  famous for its food, particularly the assam pedas food which is sour and a bit spicy. The main ingredient used are prawns, stringray, fish, or squids. Its otak-otak is also as good as those from Muar.
